Racism fuelling far-right threat in UK – MI5’s Ken McCallum warns

The problem of “toxic” racism triggers a threat that grows from the right tip, MI5’s head has warned.

Ken McCallum said MI5 saw teenagers as young as 13 who were drawn into extremist activities, often online.

But there are no signs of foreign countries who try to sow the division of race and the UK must look closer to the house to understand the problem, he said.

He also urged the public to be alert about threats from “hostile countries” such as from terrorism.

Extremism that grows at home
But he said MI5 was wary of the possibility of returning a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.

Providing an overview of the threat faced by Britain, McCallum said extreme right wing terrorism “Unfortunately here to stay”, with 10 of the 29 plots of disrupted attacks in the past four years associated with him.

And it is a threat of fuel-based, partly, by racism, he said.

“Racism is a toxic problem owned by MI5 every day, most visible in our work to deal with extreme right wing terrorism. Racism is not the only one and only the threat of fuel, but very there.”

He said in the past sometimes there was a campaign for disinformation from the country abroad who tried to push slices on problems such as races but this was not common. “We don’t currently see certain pieces of information produced by the country as a prime piece of problem.”

“If we find ourselves too much to blame abroad for this fenisma racism, we may risk do not have a portion of the problem that is our own in our own country,” he added.

He said teenagers are a growing part of counter-terrorist work, especially with the far right. This is most likely because of the strong online elements of the problem, with the youngest Mi5 people have found ages 13.

MI5 mainly focuses on terrorism related to Islam for the past 20 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks, was launched by Al-Qaeda from his base in Afghanistan.

And with Western troops now leaving Afghanistan, he acknowledged the potential of the dangers of Islamic terrorist groups who tried to rebuild their abilities there.

“If open space bags are open, some terrorist groups may be, for example, trying to rebuild some training facilities there as we have seen in the past. It doesn’t automatically follow that they will then build from there to try to direct the attack Terrorists towards England, for example, [but] which is clearly the possibility that we must be aware of, “he said.

He said the terrorist would start from a low base after 20 years seeking to them but MI5 now has to switch to different operating modes to handle threats, similar to that way handling threats from Somalia.

MI5’s head also attacked Facebook and other technology companies because they plan to launch end-to-end encryption for several platforms, such as Messenger. This will make the company unlikely to submit the contents of the user’s message to the authorities because they will no longer have their own access.

“End-end-end-encryption is done in the way Facebook currently proposes to hand over prizes to MI5 terrorists must find and overcome – and prizes to children with harassment of our colleagues at the National Crime Agency need to find and overcome,” he said.

He said technology companies have fulfilled their responsibilities to eliminate the terrorist content of their platform. But he said he wanted to make a public application so that they were seriously involved with the government – or he personally – to design public safety with privacy in the future.
