The Portugese congress has passed new labour laws that promote a healthier work- life balance and attract “ digital gadabouts” to the country. According to the legislation passed by Portugal’s Socialist Party, employers can be penalised for reaching workers outside working hours as well.
The laws were approved on Friday and came after the expansion of Work From Home due to the coronavirus epidemic. Under the new rules, employers can be fined for reaching workers after their work hours. They will also be liable to pay for the increased gas and electricity bills that get incurred due to working from home.
“The epidemic has accelerated the need to regulate what needs to be regulated,” quoted Portugal’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho.
“Telework can be a’ game changer’if we profit from the advantages and reduce the disadvantages,” she added Also, rules like banning employers from covering their workers at home and icing workers meet with their master every two months to stop insulation will be introduced We consider Portugal one of the stylish places in the world for these digital gadabouts and remote workers to choose to live in. We want to attract them to Portugal,” said Ana.
